Sea conditions can deteriorate rapidly: large swells, rough seas, high winds, and heavy surf occur frequently in open waters. One of these on the south shore of Pillar Lake and the other is at Laura Lake. Island Beach State Park requires visitors to "Carry In/Carry Out" their garbage. Popular freshwater access points by float plane to park lands on Afognak include: Thorsheim Lake, Waterfall Lake, Portage Lake, and Pauls Lake, Laura Lake, and Pillar Lake among others. The Ketchikan visitor center will be closed indefinitely for the health and safety of staff and visitors. Be aware that many of the parks, forests, and refuges in Alaska have closed their visitor centers in light of these events.
